Newspaper Notice

Once the funerals’ date, venue and celebrant are confirmed we can organise a newspaper notice for you, but it’s not compulsory – you may be able to contact everyone through your own networks.

We can place it for you in any of the national or regional newspapers. Like The Post (originally The Dominion Post), New Zealand Herald, Christchurch Press and Otago Daily Times as well as the provincial daily newspapers – like the Northern Advocate, Hawkes Bay Today, Greymouth Star etc.

The average cost is around $9.00 per five-word line.

Email us the wording, checking family names a spelt correctly, we’ll check all the other details. If wording is received by 2:00pm the notice can go in the next days edition. (Unless there is a public holiday).

With the national papers, the notice is automatically uploaded online, making searching for the funeral so much easier.

Keep an eye on the generated link – occasionally there are tributes in the ‘Guest Book’ from around the world.

Here is a generic guide to writing a newspaper notice, but feel free to get creative and tell their story, they’re always more interesting to read.

You can include;

  • Surname, first name, middle names (nickname)
  • Titles, rank, service number, lodge affiliation
  • How the person died
  • Date of death
  • Where death occurred
  • Age
  • Who was present
  • List of family members in order of seniority or priority
  • Acknowledgement to care givers
  • Donations to charity
  • Tribute (poem or message)
  • Messages to be sent to c/o address
  • Funeral details – venue, day, date and time
  • Interment or cremation details

Here is a fictitious example:
